P0280: Cylinder-seven injector high means a high-to-low-side short here

Ford’s diesel P0280 monitor identifies a specific injector-driver short classification, not excessive injection quantity.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0280 refers to cylinder seven’s injector A circuit high. Ford’s diesel summary clarifies the mechanism: the driver IC has detected a short between the injector high side and low side. That is a more precise starting point than treating “high” as excessive fuel delivery or guessing at a voltage reading.

The monitor observes a commanded circuit

The listed check is continuous when injections are requested and has a typical duration of 0.3 second. A test taken only while the output is inactive cannot reproduce every condition present during the controller’s injection event.

P0279 is grouped under injector short-circuit detection without the same high-to-low-side wording. P0207 belongs to the open-circuit family. Retaining those distinctions helps keep the fault record aligned with the type of electrical test required by the correct service information.

What remains to be established

The code identifies the seventh-cylinder channel and the controller’s short classification; it does not establish which physical component contains the fault. A failed injector, a wiring defect, or a driver diagnosis cannot be selected merely from the code title.

A useful follow-up preserves companion injector and driver codes, verifies the actual cylinder/channel mapping for the engine, and follows the applicable high-voltage injector-circuit procedure. A later smooth idle does not itself demonstrate that the intermittent energized short classification has been resolved. The summary does not authorize a bench-current test, give safe probe locations, or specify a replacement component.

Source and applicability

This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 16.
