P0309: cylinder 9 misfire does not identify an ignition failure

P0309 identifies cylinder 9's misfire, while Ross-Tech lists ignition, fuel delivery and compression among the distinct diagnostic branches.

Documented application

Ross-Tech independent VAG diagnostic guidance; match complete fault description and controller. Vehicle-specific notes do not establish universal applicability.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0309 identifies a misfire associated with cylinder 9. The cylinder designation narrows where the combustion problem was detected; it does not name the failed component. Ross-Tech's diagnostic reference includes ignition faults, injectors, fuel supply and pressure, compression and other engine problems among its possible causes.

Keep the three combustion requirements separate

The source's checks distinguish ignition, fuel metering and compression. That separation prevents a cylinder-specific code from becoming an automatic coil order. A cylinder can fail to contribute normally because the mixture is unsuitable or compression is inadequate even when an ignition component is working. This explanation is diagnostic reasoning based on the source's alternatives.

Ross-Tech also includes an empty fuel supply and EVAP purge-related problems. Those possibilities show why the surrounding fault record matters: a cylinder number is not proof that the entire cause is physically confined to that cylinder.

Identify cylinder 9 correctly

The reference does not supply a universal cylinder layout, connector location or engine application. Establish numbering from the actual engine's repair information before any component comparison. The useful repair evidence is a test result that separates spark, mixture and compression causes for that engine. Merely clearing P0309 or finding an aged spark plug does not establish which condition produced the misfire. This article follows Ross-Tech's independent guidance, not a manufacturer-specific repair authorization.
