P0370: Crankshaft-reference plausibility on the N62TU

The BMW N62TU P0370 chart evaluates the crankshaft reference signal and its physical sensing geometry.

Documented application

2008 BMW 750Li (E66), N62TU 4.8L; BMW DME monitor chart reproduced by Operation CHARM.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

BMW associates P0370 with DME fault 2B5D, a crankshaft-sensor plausibility entry. This is a timing-reference problem observed while the engine is turning, rather than a diagnosis of a specific cylinder's combustion.

The sensor and its target both matter

The service chart directs inspection of the connector and harness, followed by the geometry of the sensor and reluctor. That second requirement is significant: a correct electrical connection does not establish that the sensor is seeing the intended target correctly. Replacing the sensor without considering its relationship to the reluctor can miss the source of an implausible reference pattern.

The monitor is enabled with Terminal 15 active and the engine turning over. Its memory section describes at least nine faults with a less-than-20-millisecond notation. The compact wording does not explain enough to turn that notation into a general waveform specification, so it should be interpreted using the matching diagnostic equipment and complete vehicle information.

Interpret the emergency modes correctly

The chart lists a second-driving-cycle emissions lamp and emergency strategies for variable valve lift, VANOS, and engine-speed sensing. Those responses can influence the way the engine behaves after the timing-reference fault is recognized. They do not independently prove a failed valve-control actuator.

Verification should address the crankshaft reference pattern and the physical/electrical sensing arrangement. The published service direction permits sensor replacement as indicated by those checks, rather than identifying every P0370 occurrence as a sensor-only failure. Its scope is this documented N62TU monitor, not every engine that uses a high-resolution reference code.
