Documented application
Ford 1998 model-year 7.3L diesel California glow-plug system, revision February 14, 2003.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0380 is the glow-plug relay circuit fault in Ford's 1998 7.3L diesel California-system summary. The controller's internal driver checks for an open circuit, short to ground or short to power. This identifies an electrical control-path problem; it does not identify an individual glow plug or a particular bank's heating performance.
Understand the system being monitored
This documented system uses a relay, shunt strips and one shunt-monitoring circuit per bank. The relay supplies glow-plug power from the battery, while the PCM determines on-time from oil temperature, barometric pressure and battery voltage. Ford describes normal commanded intervals ranging from one to 120 seconds.
Consequently, a short glow-plug interval in one operating condition is not by itself proof of P0380. The relay driver's fault status is the relevant evidence.
Separate control and bank diagnostics
The P0380 check runs continuously with no listed entry conditions. Bank-monitor codes P1391 and P1393 use different voltage and duty-cycle conditions, so they should be interpreted as additional evidence rather than synonyms for this relay fault. Follow the correct California-system wiring and relay-control procedure to isolate the circuit problem. Glow-plug feeds carry substantial current; the source does not supply a safe bypass test, and replacing all plugs is not a conclusion supported by this code alone.
