P046D: A short EGR position excursion differs from a valve stuck open
Explain Ford P046D EGR position-signal intermittency and its shorter persistence threshold than steady low or high faults.

Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the documented monitor variants. No individual model, engine or calibration fitment inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
Ford lists P046D as an intermittent or erratic EGR position-sensor result. The relevant electrical evidence is a brief excursion outside the expected signal range, rather than proof that the valve has remained mechanically open or closed.
Persistence separates the electrical categories
In the documented strategy, P046D uses a position signal below five percent or above 95 percent of full scale for 0.4 seconds. The sustained low and high codes use the same range edges but a four-second persistence. A short interruption can therefore produce P046D without meeting the longer-duration criteria.
That distinction makes signal timing important. A later scan-tool position value may be normal, and a slow data refresh may miss the excursion that the controller counted.
Do not confuse position sensing with flow or actuator control
Ford lists EGR flow checks and stuck-actuator checks separately. An intermittent position signal can undermine interpretation of those functions, but P046D alone does not establish a blocked passage or a mechanically stuck valve.
The cited electrical check requires eligible supply conditions and running speed; one variant lists battery and H-bridge voltage above 8.25 volts and engine speed above 400 rpm. Apply those details only to the matching implementation. Verification should demonstrate stable in-range position feedback while the monitor operates. The summary supplies no universal connector pinout or replacement decision, so the actual circuit and valve arrangement must be confirmed first.
