Documented application
Volkswagen 2014 Golf/GTI/Golf R Quick Reference Specification Book, January 2014; CJAA chart only. Source-scoped monitor explanation, not universal thresholds.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0486 covers low-pressure EGR position-sensor circuit faults in Volkswagen's 2014 CJAA chart. The same row group includes both an open-circuit classification and a short-to-ground classification.
One code can include opposite voltage extremes
Volkswagen lists signal voltage above 4.7 volts for the open-circuit entry and below 0.21 volts for the ground-short entry. The generic code therefore does not tell the technician which voltage direction occurred. The detailed fault record and actual circuit evidence are needed to distinguish those branches.
These values belong to the position-sensor signal. They are not EGR flow rates or a command to drive the valve. A valve position displayed by a scanner may be unreliable if the underlying signal is outside its usable electrical range.
A circuit fault is different from stuck-closed performance
P045F compares actual and desired position to classify a closed-state problem. P0486 instead provides electrical signal-range evidence. Treating both as proof of carbon blockage would ignore the manufacturer's distinction.
Use the exact CJAA low-pressure EGR wiring and workshop procedure for further testing. The quick-reference table gives no connector pinout, supply specification or method to distinguish the sensor from its harness. It supports the two electrical classifications without identifying the failed component.
