P0503: Abrupt transmission output-speed changes need context
P0503 detects implausible loop-to-loop output-speed changes after qualified stable operation.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0503 evaluates intermittent transmission output-speed information in GM's GMDAT summary. The failure description concerns a loop-to-loop change of at least 350 rpm. That is a change-rate observation within the controller's sampling process, rather than a maximum allowable transmission speed.
Stable conditions precede the comparison
The published enable conditions include an output speed of at least 200 rpm for two seconds and a bounded positive speed change over a qualifying period. The strategy also waits after a four-wheel-drive range change. Those qualifications help distinguish an implausible signal jump from an expected operating transition.
The failure condition must continue for the documented 3.25-second interval. A single isolated jump in a scan-tool display, which may update more slowly than the controller, is not automatically the same event.
Compare intermittent activity with complete absence
The adjacent P0502 entry checks lack of output-speed activity under its own conditions. P0503 instead concerns a signal that changes implausibly. Recording whether the signal vanished, jumped or recovered helps preserve that distinction.
The source lists additional voltage and fault-state prerequisites across the table. Use the exact transmission's procedure before judging a signal or replacing a sensor. Verification should show consistent output-speed behavior and successful monitor completion after the qualifying conditions are met. A short stationary check cannot demonstrate that an intermittent speed-change problem is corrected.
