P050B: Cold-start timing performance is compared with catalyst-heating intent
P050B measures ignition-efficiency deviation during eligible idle catalyst heating, rather than comparing ignition timing with one fixed angle.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2, specific documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability require confirmation; application-matrix filename join is unresolved.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P050B concerns cold-start ignition timing performance. In GM’s example, the monitor compares actual ignition efficiency with the efficiency requested for catalyst heating while the engine is idling. A single ignition-angle reading cannot represent that whole assessment.
The heating strategy must be active
The row requires catalyst heating to be activated and the current cold-start heating period at idle to exceed ten seconds. It evaluates a mean efficiency deviation against a mapped threshold ranging from 0.27 to 0.999 and lists a two-second assessment with two-trip reporting.
The enable logic also considers end-of-start status, homogeneous operation and initial-fueling conditions. These requirements distinguish an eligible catalyst-heating event from ordinary warm idle or an unrelated acceleration.
Preserve the requested behavior
A useful record includes the heating request and actual operating mode alongside the ignition-efficiency or manufacturer diagnostic parameters. Retarded timing during a heating strategy is not, by itself, evidence of this fault; the question is whether actual behavior matches the intended heating operation.
The threshold is a calibration map, not a universal timing angle or an instruction to adjust ignition manually. The source does not identify a failed coil, plug, sensor or catalyst from P050B alone. Confirm that the correct heating monitor ran, then follow the applicable diagnostic procedure to investigate why the observed efficiency differed from the requested result.
Source and applicability
This explanation covers the cited GM monitor, not every vehicle carrying this code. The application-matrix filename does not resolve cleanly to this file, so no model or engine fitment is assigned. GM diagnostic table, PDF page 533; GM diagnostic table, PDF page 534.
