P052A: Cold-start bank 1 cam advance has a short diagnostic window

Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the documented monitor variants. No individual model, engine or calibration fitment inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P052A identifies cam timing that is over-advanced on bank 1 during Ford's cold-start emission-reduction strategy. It belongs to a specific cold-start target-error check, not merely the general cam-timing monitor evaluated throughout a longer drive.
The command must occur during cold-start control
Ford requires variable cam timing control to be enabled and commanded to advance or retard during cold-start emission reduction. The entry table limits the time since cam-phase monitoring began to 60 seconds, and the listed evaluation duration is five seconds.
A warm engine observation made after that window may show normal timing without reproducing the condition. Preserve the initial commanded phase, measured phase and elapsed time from the cold-start control event.
Separate excess advance from lack of movement
The source gives an 11-degree over-advance target-error criterion. It also describes a distinct response/stuck-pin condition: ten degrees of commanded phasing without at least two degrees of movement. Those are different forms of evidence within the check and should not be collapsed into one assumed mechanical failure.
Use the actual calibration's data labels to determine which response was observed. P052A does not by itself establish a slipped chain or identify the cam actuator as the failed part. Verification should include an eligible cold-start timing command and a successful monitor result; a later idle or cleared code alone does not test the same short opportunity.
Source and applicability
This explanation covers the cited Ford monitor variants, not every vehicle displaying this code. Match the engine, sensor architecture and calibration before applying numerical limits.
