P0550: Titan steering-pressure feedback and idle compensation
The 2004 Titan P0550 diagnosis concerns pressure-sensor voltage used for idle-load compensation, with sensor-supply faults taking priority.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0550 on the documented 2004 Nissan Titan identifies excessively low or high voltage from the power-steering pressure sensor. The sensor reports steering load to the engine controller, which adjusts throttle opening and idle speed to account for that load.
The code is about the load signal
The sensor is installed in the high-pressure steering tube, but the diagnostic result does not measure the condition of the whole steering mechanism. Nissan identifies the sensor circuit and sensor as the immediate possibilities. A pressure-system component should not be selected merely because the code contains the words “power steering.”
The scan-tool reference changes from OFF with the steering centered to ON when the wheel is turned under the specified warm-idle conditions. That change gives the technician a way to compare the reported load state with the actual steering input. The circuit diagnosis still determines whether a missing or implausible response comes from the sensor or its connections.
Check the shared supply first when directed
If P1229 is present with P0550, Nissan directs diagnosis of that sensor-power-supply code first. This is a meaningful priority: a compromised supply can affect the pressure reading without establishing an isolated pressure-sensor failure.
The manual also says this particular diagnosis does not illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp. An unlit check-engine light is therefore not evidence that the stored result is irrelevant. Record the companion codes, load-state response and circuit findings. Hydraulic-line opening is not required simply to interpret the code and should remain a qualified workshop operation.
