P072B: Stuck in reverse is judged from failed disengagement attempts
P072B in the cited TCM records repeated failure to leave reverse, including position-sensor and actuation-timeout paths.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2, specific documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and calibration applicability require confirmation; application-matrix filename join is unresolved.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P072B means the controller has diagnosed a failure to disengage reverse. In the GM implementation, the result comes from repeated attempts to move the synchronizer toward neutral. It is not simply a statement that the driver selected reverse.
More than one path can prevent disengagement
The table includes a shift-fork position sensor 4 electrical or consistency fault during the shift. Another path involves unmet actuation-state transition conditions and a state timer reaching its calibrated timeout. A “stuck” result can therefore involve feedback or control-sequence evidence, not only a mechanically jammed gear.
Reverse disengagement must be requested and active. System pressure must exceed 4.5 bar, the application must be outside error and bypass states, and fault confirmation requires at least four failed disengagement attempts.
Preserve direction and attempt history
Keep the reverse-to-neutral request, position-feedback status and actuation-state history together. A failure to engage reverse is a different event from being unable to leave it, and those two complaints should not be merged during diagnosis.
The exact state-transition limits are delegated to referenced summary attachments. This article does not invent their values or a forced-shift test. The source supplies a repeated-disengagement diagnosis, not proof that the entire transmission needs replacement. Confirm the transmission-specific procedure and feedback mapping before investigating the hydraulic or mechanical path.
Source and applicability
This explanation covers the cited GM monitor, not every vehicle carrying this code. The application-matrix filename does not resolve cleanly to this file, so no model or engine fitment is assigned. GM diagnostic table, PDF page 1042.
