P0780: Quest shift performance requires more than an electrical code check
The 2004 Quest RE5F22A P0780 monitor evaluates abnormal shift behavior and directs checks across several solenoid circuits.

Documented application
2004 Nissan Quest factory AT manual, RE5F22A transmission section, January 2005 revision. The shift-monitor conditions and repair sequence are transmission-specific.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0780 in the 2004 Nissan Quest RE5F22A procedure means the transmission did not shift as commanded. Nissan describes abnormal changes between input and output rotation, shifts that take too long or end abruptly, and excessive engine-speed rise during a shift.
A performance diagnosis still needs circuit checks
The description emphasizes mechanical or hydraulic behavior, such as a sticking control valve or improper solenoid operation, rather than an isolated open/short diagnosis. Nevertheless, the actual diagnostic sequence first checks shift solenoids D and E, then pressure-control solenoids A, B and C.
Those circuit checks are not contradictory. They establish whether the actuators supporting the shift can be controlled before a persistent performance problem is assigned to the internal repair branch. P0780 does not identify one uniquely failed solenoid.
Monitor availability affects interpretation
The manual states that this malfunction is not detected while the overdrive-off indicator is already signaling another self-diagnostic malfunction. Consequently, the absence of P0780 during an active competing fault is not a general assurance that shift performance is correct.
The confirmation procedure also requires warm transmission fluid and operation through the relevant gears. A cold stationary recheck cannot reproduce that evaluation. A qualified technician should record the failed shift, input/output behavior, companion faults and completed circuit checks before discussing internal repair.
This is a transmission-specific procedure. Its multi-solenoid investigation and monitor restrictions should not be generalized to unrelated vehicles simply because they also report the standardized P0780 number.
