The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0819 concerns correlation between up/down shift requests and transmission range. Mazda's CW6A-EL implementation checks whether the M-position, upshift and downshift signals form a plausible combination.
The switch combination is the evidence
With the engine running, battery voltage at least 8 V and no range-sensor DTC, an incompatible combination lasting one second can trigger the code. Examples include an up or down request when the M-position signal is off, or an M signal inconsistent with the selected range and hydraulic-switch information.
The fail-safe inhibits manual mode. This is therefore not automatically a shift-solenoid failure or a reason to diagnose internal transmission clutches. The disagreement concerns the information that requests manual shifts.
Why the instrument cluster is included
Mazda first checks instrument-cluster DTCs. The subsequent flow examines the selector assembly, its ground, the cluster connection and the selector signal paths for opens or shorts. It also includes the shift-panel indicator assembly as a possible cause. An engine-only or transmission-only scan may omit relevant cluster information.
Confirmation exercises the relevant range and up/down request combinations under the prescribed controlled conditions. Record the inconsistent signals before clearing them. Professional testing must secure the vehicle appropriately when manipulating the selector; the code does not establish that any one switch is defective until its signal path and the correlated range information have been assessed.
