Documented application
Kia SA499/ELE256 revision 1 applies to affected 2023 Sportage NQ5a VINs produced January 12–June 1, 2022.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
A power-input code with a mechanical cause
Kia documented a specific P0880 case on affected 2023 Sportage NQ5a vehicles: the transmission harness can touch the shift-cable bracket bolt. Worn insulation may create an intermittent ground. The resulting warning can accompany P07xx transmission codes, and the transmission may default to fifth gear with poor acceleration. These observations establish a harness-related diagnostic path; they do not establish an internal transmission failure.
What must be confirmed
Production dates narrow the population, but the bulletin additionally requires checking the affected VIN list. During service, the relevant evidence is contact or chafing at the specified harness section between its retaining clip and tie. Finding some unrelated damaged wire elsewhere does not confirm this campaign mechanism. Conversely, an intermittent fault may not be active during a stationary scan, so the recorded circumstances and other transmission codes remain useful.
Repair and verification focus
The correction protects the affected harness section and deals with insulation damage before protection is installed. The final physical check is important: the harness must no longer contact the bracket bolt. Kia also warns that poorly seated surrounding connectors after reassembly can create a no-start condition. A good repair record therefore identifies the contact point, documents connector seating and confirms normal vehicle operation afterward. This article summarizes the historical campaign; it does not determine present warranty eligibility or authorize driving a vehicle that accelerates abnormally. Outside the specified VIN population, follow the applicable P0880 power-supply diagnosis.
