P08C4: How a synchronizer integrity test identifies a hydraulically stuck-off valve

See why P08C4 depends on controlled rod movements and a comparison test, rather than a solenoid resistance reading alone.

Documented application

2025 GM 25OBDG07A Part 2 monitor tables only; model, engine and transmission applicability are not established by the unresolved application-matrix filename join.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

The generic P08C4 label describes pressure-control solenoid M performance. In this GM transmission table it is specifically the first synchronizer pressure-control valve's hydraulic stuck-off diagnosis. The routine evaluates what shift rods do when hydraulic routes are deliberately exercised.

Two missing movements need confirmation

A synchronizer recovery routine can request the integrity test after a shift-related failure. A mismatch between stored gear information and startup position or speed evidence can also trigger it. The test makes small rod movements; its stated purpose is not to engage or disengage gears.

The first valve becomes suspect when the specified tests fail to move the relevant rods beyond 100 micrometres with opposite selector targets. However, lack of movement alone could leave uncertainty about the position measurement. A further test using another pressure-control valve must demonstrate movement greater than that threshold on one of those rods before the stuck-off conclusion is confirmed.

What makes diagnostic evidence useful

A report showing only the final code omits the decisive comparison. The relevant questions are which test cases ran, whether the alternative valve produced detectable movement and whether the confirmation suite completed. A routine that never became eligible is not a successful retest.

Electrical continuity by itself does not reproduce this hydraulic test. Equally, a stationary rod is not sufficient evidence to order a valve before the sensor-confirmation logic is considered. Intrusive transmission actuation belongs within the applicable service procedure and controlled workshop conditions.
