Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the cited monitor and transmission architectures. No individual vehicle fitment or universal calibration is inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0983 identifies a short-to-power condition in shift solenoid D's electrical category in Ford's tables. Its detailed representation is P0765_12. This is distinct from P0767/P0765_7E, the documented functionally failed-on result for D.
Do not substitute response evidence for circuit evidence
Ford describes electrical checking as continuous and based on smart-driver fault feedback, with a typical 1.5-second persistence interval. Functional monitoring instead accumulates responses around control transitions. A held hydraulic state alone cannot confirm the driver's electrical classification.
The word high is not a universal terminal-voltage specification. The command state and the exact circuit design determine how an external reading should be interpreted; the summary does not provide that pin-level test procedure.
Keep the original event intact
A useful diagnostic record includes the complete code, driver status, requested D activity and concurrent supply or other channel faults. If the channel later works normally, that observation does not locate the earlier power-path fault. If it continues to respond incorrectly, the electrical result still needs proper isolation rather than an assumed mechanical cause.
The source assigns a failure type to the D control channel, not a universal clutch or valve position. The applicable transmission's electrical procedure is required to distinguish the load, wiring and output-stage evidence before a replacement decision is justified.
