P0D11: Negative charging-contactor control circuit and its blind spot

P0D11 identifies a negative charging-contactor driver feedback mismatch, with different tests for commanded-on and commanded-off states.

Documented application

15OBDG01 Hybrid Diagnostics, cited controller and monitor only. Historical calibration limits are not universal specifications; per-code vehicle, engine and hardware applicability must be verified.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

The negative control channel

GM’s P0D11 monitor checks electrical integrity of the negative charging-contactor control circuit. It compares what the driver was commanded to do with the circuit’s actual electrical state. “Negative” identifies the controlled contactor channel; it does not mean the code measures a negative battery voltage or proves the contactor’s power contacts are open.

When the driver is commanded on, feedback current below 57 milliamps meets the printed open-circuit criterion. When commanded off, output voltage above 4 volts indicates an open load, while voltage above the driver supply minus 0.4 volt is the short-to-battery criterion. State information is therefore necessary before interpreting a voltage or current reading.

Limits that change the conclusion

The source explicitly excludes detection of a short to ground by this monitor. A missing P0D11 is consequently not a comprehensive continuity test. Conversely, a stored code cannot select among every possible contactor, wiring and driver cause without the corresponding electrical evidence.

The monitor requires the 12-volt supply above 10.2 volts and counts 40 failed observations within 50 samples at 12.5-millisecond intervals. It lists 625 milliseconds for a passing result. Recovering supply voltage or seeing one normal feedback value does not by itself reproduce that completed pass.

Use the negative-channel command and feedback history, with the supporting low-voltage supply, to choose the applicable service diagnostic branch. The numerical limits here are historical GM control-circuit criteria. They are not instructions to energize a contactor manually, access high-voltage terminals or replace a battery assembly.
