Documented application

Ford SSM 51866: some 2021–2023 Mustang Mach-E vehicles, P0E5F in SOBDM, red charge indicator and failed 48-amp AC Level 2 charging. Lower-current comparison and charge-port remedy are limited to this documented condition.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

The charging-current pattern is useful evidence

Ford SSM 51866 describes some 2021–2023 Mustang Mach-E vehicles that cannot charge their high-voltage battery using a 48-amp AC Level 2 charger. The exterior charge-status indicator blinks red and P0E5F is stored in the secondary on-board diagnostic control module A, or SOBDM. A Service Soon message and FordPass warning may appear on the next key cycle.

The message associates this pattern with excessive charge-port temperature. It also notes that the concern may be absent when using a 32-amp or lower AC Level 2 charger. That load-related difference helps identify the reported case; successful charging at a lower setting does not demonstrate that the underlying condition has been repaired.

What the bulletin supports replacing

For the described condition, Ford’s published correction is charge-port replacement under Workshop Manual Section 414-03B. This is materially different from replacing the on-board charger or traction battery based only on the code’s broad battery-charger wording.

The source provides no universal temperature threshold, connector pin test or proof that every P0E5F event needs the same part. A technician should first match the model years, charging equipment rating, warning sequence and reporting module, then check applicable current service information and the vehicle’s condition.

Do not intentionally repeat a suspected overheating event to collect more data or regard lower-current operation as blanket permission to continue charging. Existing session records and the complete scan report are useful evidence without stressing the connector again. Charge-port inspection and replacement involve the vehicle’s charging system and should follow the manufacturer’s safety and service procedures.
