Documented application
Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the documented monitor variants. No individual model, engine or calibration fitment inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
Ford lists P2004 as intake manifold runner control stuck open on bank 1 in its vacuum-actuated V-engine strategy. The functional check compares plate behavior with the commanded position; it is not simply a test that the control solenoid receives voltage.
Functional response is counted in events
The source enables IMRC monitoring after coolant exceeds 40°F and lists four events for stuck-position or over-travel evaluation. Electrical circuit checks use a separate five-second duration. A solenoid circuit that passes once therefore does not establish that the runners follow commands across the required functional events.
Preserve the requested runner state and the bank 1 position feedback together. An open position is only diagnostically meaningful relative to the command and the conditions under which the monitor evaluates it.
Keep position sensing and control faults separate
Ford lists control-circuit, position-sensor low/high and over-travel codes alongside the stuck-open result. Invalid position feedback can change the interpretation of an apparent mismatch, while a valid electrical control signal does not prove mechanical response.
The cited strategy is explicitly vacuum-actuated and for a V-engine arrangement. Do not infer that every P2004 vehicle uses that hardware. Use the matching engine's service information to evaluate the command path, feedback and runner mechanism. The source supports a functional mismatch but does not identify a broken linkage, leaking vacuum component or failed actuator without further evidence.
Source and applicability
This explanation covers the cited Ford monitor variants, not every vehicle displaying this code. Match the engine, sensor architecture and calibration before applying numerical limits.
