P2020: Bank 2 runner over-travel requires valid position feedback

Understand Ford P2020 IMRC range monitoring and why it differs from the bank 2 sensor’s high-voltage code.

Documented application

Ford 2024–2025 gasoline OBD operation summary, July 16 2024 revision; only the documented monitor variants. No individual model, engine or calibration fitment inferred.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2020 is Ford's bank 2 intake manifold runner position over-travel result in the cited vacuum-actuated V-engine monitor. It addresses the operational position range, whereas P2022 on the same page concerns an electrically high position-sensor circuit.

A high position is not automatically a high circuit voltage fault

Ford separates functional over-travel, stuck positions and electrical low/high sensing categories. A valid sensor can report a position beyond the expected mechanism range, while an invalid electrical signal may not be credible position evidence at all. Preserve the related codes before deciding which situation applies.

The functional monitor uses four events and begins after coolant temperature exceeds 40°F. Electrical checks have their own five-second evaluation. This timing difference matters when confirming whether a repair has actually exercised the over-travel check.

Verify bank 2 against its command and limits

Retain the requested state, bank 2 feedback and the completion result for the matching engine. A normal bank 1 test does not establish bank 2's permitted travel or correct response.

The summary supplies no universal mechanical stop dimension, position angle or component location. It therefore cannot identify a particular linkage or sensor failure from P2020 alone. Use the exact service procedure to determine the reason for the range violation, then confirm valid feedback and motion within the allowed operating range across eligible events. The documented scope should not be extended automatically to other runner architectures.

Source and applicability

This explanation covers the cited Ford monitor variants, not every vehicle displaying this code. Match the engine, sensor architecture and calibration before applying numerical limits.
