P204F: reductant pressure did not build after repeated attempts

The GM P204F example evaluates unsuccessful reductant pressure buildup only after specified control states, attempt counts and dwell conditions.

Documented application

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P204F is a broad reductant-system performance code, but this GM calibration gives it a specific pressure-buildup meaning. The monitored event is unsuccessful pressure development in the reductant dosing system, not a direct declaration that the fluid quality or NOx sensor is faulty.

The control sequence qualifies the pressure

The cited failure boundary is pump-module pressure at or below 375 kPa. The controller must be in its pressure-buildup state with the corresponding status running. It also requires the documented defrost check and environmental conditions.

The table lists at least 20 buildup attempts across the pressure-buildup and ventilation states, plus minimum dwell periods in those states. Consequently, a low pressure reading before the commanded sequence has had its specified opportunity to build pressure does not reproduce the documented failure.

Use the pressure trace with its state history

A technician needs pressure, requested state, attempt count and dwell information together. That record distinguishes a failed buildup sequence from a system that was not yet commanded or enabled to reach its working condition. Defrost and heater-related conditions may change whether the test is eligible.

The parameter row does not isolate a pump, restriction, leak or electrical supply defect. It gives no instruction to replace the complete dosing system. Follow the vehicle-specific reductant diagnostic procedure to distinguish those causes and verify successful buildup under the correct conditions. Do not improvise pressurization or disconnect a pressurized dosing line using this summary as a service method.
