P20BF: Reading a DEF line-heater low-circuit diagnosis correctly
Learn why P20BF concerns an electrical ground-short pattern and why heater command history matters.

Documented application
2025 GM 25OBDG04B DEFC monitor calibration only; this document does not establish applicability to every model, engine or reductant system.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P20BF concerns the reductant line heater's low-circuit condition in the cited GM DEFC monitor. The table identifies this as heater 2 and describes a short to ground affecting a high-side or low-side control path. It is not a measurement of low DEF temperature.
Why the circuit is assessed after the output stops
An on-state driver fault can start the process, but the final failure mode is determined after the heater is commanded off. The off-state ADC pattern used for a ground-short condition differs from the open-load pattern associated with P20BD.
That means a line heater that is no longer commanded on may already have been deliberately disabled to classify its electrical fault. Judging the controller solely from its present zero command misses the sequence that produced the code.
Verification should preserve the fault type
The monitor uses a two-second failure accumulation and specifies next-driving-cycle recovery. A change in instantaneous current or command therefore does not by itself establish that the diagnostic has recovered.
The next useful distinction is whether the vehicle's actual circuit test confirms a path to ground, rather than an open path or a power short. This summary does not locate that path or provide pin-level specifications. Keep the recorded driver category, heater identity and command transition available for the appropriate wiring-based diagnosis. Replacing a heater because fluid was cold would not address the particular electrical evidence that P20BF reports.
