Documented application
Documented 2025 GM diagnostic parameter monitor in 25OBDG04B.pdf; model, engine and calibration applicability require vehicle-specific confirmation.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P20F8 is an intake-runner control performance code in the reviewed GM swirl-motor system. The controller compares requested flap position with the measured position and detects an absolute tracking error above 10%. The source describes this as an obstruction-detection strategy during opening or closing, not a direct electrical short test.
The target must first settle
Monitoring requires closed-loop position control and a sufficiently steady setpoint. Its listed change-rate window is greater than −100 and less than 100% per second for at least 0.38 second. This prevents every ordinary commanded transition from being treated immediately as a tracking failure.
The source also requires coolant temperature at least 40°C or achievement of the cooling-system target condition. Cold-start strategy must be inactive, and the coolant-temperature sensor must be free of its relevant fault. These gates explain why a cold or rapidly changing-command check may not exercise P20F8.
Confirming the result
Cranking, code clearing and end-of-trip activity are excluded. Relay supply must exceed 11 volts, diagnostics must be enabled and relevant swirl sensor/actuator conditions must permit closed-loop operation. Qualification uses 960 failures in 1,200 samples at 6.25-millisecond intervals, with Type B reporting over two trips.
Verification should compare actual and requested position after the target settles under these conditions. A successful electrical test alone cannot establish mechanical tracking, while a mismatch during an ineligible transition does not reproduce the monitor. The source supplies no obstruction location or replacement instruction; exact system applicability remains vehicle-specific.
