P2161: A transfer-case speed drop can compete with the no-activity timer
Learn the GM P2161 signal-drop assessment and why its relationship with P2160 matters when interpreting the first code to appear.

Documented application
2025 GM 06C documented monitor only. Vehicle, engine and controller calibration applicability must be established separately; no model fitment is inferred from the file.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2161 is an intermittent, erratic or high vehicle-speed sensor B entry. In this GM application, the strategy targets an unrealistic drop in the transfer-case output speed signal. The source-specific meaning is therefore about the speed history, not simply a permanently high reading.
The change is assessed within a stable operating opportunity
The table lists a raw speed delta above 650 rpm with a 25-millisecond update rate. It also describes a failure-time threshold above three seconds and a subsequent count threshold. Range changes and stability conditions qualify the opportunity; the source includes a delay after a four-wheel-drive mode change and a period of stable speed before assessment.
These conditions explain why a transient during a legitimate range transition should not be treated as the same event. Preserve the raw speed on both sides of the drop and the range-change timing rather than looking only at the final value.
A shared event can lead to different completed codes
GM explicitly notes that a drop may also start P2160's low-activity timer. The two timers can then race to completion. Which code appears first does not, by itself, identify a separate physical cause.
Other speed and crank-signal validity conditions also matter to the comparison. The table supports investigating an implausible speed transition but does not locate a failed sensor, harness section or controller. That isolation requires the exact transfer-case signal architecture and its applicable service procedure.
