P228B: rail pressure stays low despite maximum regulator command

P228B combines a rail-pressure deficit with a regulator command beyond the calibrated fully closed criterion.

Documented application

Documented 2025 GM diagnostic parameter monitor in 25OBDG04B.pdf; model, engine and calibration applicability require vehicle-specific confirmation.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P228B is the regulator 2 forced-engine-shutdown code in the reviewed GM monitor. It detects rail pressure remaining below target when the pressure regulator has reached its effective control limit. This differs from an electrical circuit diagnosis of the regulator solenoid.

Pressure deficit and command are separate evidence

The pressure shortfall must exceed 30 MPa. The regulator's pressure command must also exceed the map used to identify a fully closed command. That map depends on actual rail pressure: the published examples range from a 15-MPa command at zero rail pressure to 270 MPa at 250-MPa rail pressure.

Those values are control thresholds, not instructions to create those pressures during testing. They show why one fixed command value cannot represent maximum regulator authority across all operating conditions.

When the monitor applies

The engine must be running, relay voltage must be at least 11 volts and the pressure regulator must be in closed-loop control. Qualification requires 160 failures out of 320 samples at 25 milliseconds each. Reporting is Type A, one trip.

Verification should assess desired versus actual pressure and the regulator's command in the correct control mode. A normal electrical resistance result alone cannot establish restored hydraulic pressure control. The code does not identify the exact cause of the shortfall or mandate replacing the valve. High-pressure fuel diagnosis and any component access require the appropriate professional service procedure. These criteria are limited to the documented 2025 GM calibration pending vehicle-specific confirmation.
