P2444: AIR pump stuck-on wording can describe a control-circuit fault

See why this GM P2444 implementation checks the secondary-air pump control circuit rather than proving that the pump is mechanically stuck.

Documented application

GM 2009 09OBDG04 Engine Diagnostics, only the cited secondary-air monitor. The file does not establish the applicability of this code to a particular model or engine; thresholds are calibration-specific.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2444 is commonly described as a secondary-air pump stuck on. In the cited GM Group 04 implementation, however, the secondary-air pump row assigns P2444 to circuit continuity toward voltage. The monitor is observing an electrical control condition through the output driver's internal voltage assessment.

The adjacent codes clarify the meaning

The same row assigns P0418 to an open circuit and P2445 to continuity toward ground. That grouping is important: this implementation is distinguishing control-circuit failure modes. It does not directly measure pump rotation or establish that a relay has physically welded closed.

A pump that can be heard running and an electrical driver fault are separate observations. Either can help a technician understand the event, but neither should silently replace the other in the diagnostic record. The table provides no external probe voltage or connector pin test.

Both command states matter

The source requires the output to be activated and deactivated for complete checking. Engine speed must exceed 80 rpm, and battery voltage must lie above 9.99 V and below 17.99 V. The listed fault recognition interval is 0.2 seconds, with illumination after two driving cycles.

Those conditions explain why observing only a commanded-on event may leave the check incomplete. Verification should establish that the appropriate electrical monitor completed across its required states, not simply that pump noise stopped after a reset. Use the vehicle's wiring and control strategy to distinguish the driver, circuit and load before considering replacement.
