P244C: Regeneration temperature falls short of a changing target

Learn how P244C compares temperature before the particulate filter with a fuel-and-speed-dependent regeneration target.

Documented application

GM 2009 09OBDG01 Duramax Engine Diagnostics, only the cited ECM monitor. This historical calibration does not establish applicability to every Duramax vehicle or provide a complete service procedure.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P244C means the exhaust did not reach the expected temperature during particulate-filter regeneration in the cited Duramax monitor. The controller uses the exhaust temperature sensor before the DPF and compares its reading with a target determined by fueling and engine speed.

A shortfall, not one universal minimum

The listed failure is more than 100°C below that target for five minutes while active DPF regeneration is commanded. The 100°C figure is a temperature difference, not an absolute exhaust-temperature threshold. A single reading cannot be judged correctly without the target and active-regeneration state that accompanied it.

That distinction also separates P244C from a soot-loading conclusion. On the same source page, P2463 uses a modeled particulate accumulation threshold. P244C evaluates the thermal result of regeneration; by itself it does not quantify filter soot mass or establish that the filter must be replaced.

Evidence that narrows the problem

A useful diagnostic record contains the upstream temperature trend, regeneration status, engine operating state and available commanded target. A temperature that rises but consistently remains short of target differs from an implausibly fixed sensor reading, although this summary does not assign a definitive cause to either pattern.

Verification requires a qualified assessment of temperature performance during a permitted regeneration event. An ordinary warm engine or a cleared fault cannot establish that this five-minute comparison passed. Exhaust and regeneration temperatures can be hazardous, so forced regeneration and component testing require the vehicle-specific professional procedure; this table is not authorization to initiate one.
