P246C: DPF restriction reaches the forced-power-limitation threshold

Ford diesel P246C uses estimated soot at twice the normal regeneration trigger and is associated with immediate warning indications.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P246C is diesel particulate-filter restriction with forced limited power. Ford’s diesel summary ties the condition to estimated soot at twice the load that normally triggers regeneration. The stated 200% is relative to that regeneration trigger; it is not a claim that the filter is physically twice its volume full.

The monitor’s reference is a calibrated soot load

Ford lists continuous monitoring, a typical 300-second duration, and a requirement for valid DPF pressure information. The page associates this fault with immediate MIL and wrench-light indications.

Because the threshold is relative, the summary does not provide one universal soot mass in grams. The underlying estimate and its valid pressure input matter when interpreting the result. A single pressure reading without its applicable soot-model context cannot reproduce the whole determination.

Limited power changes the practical response

This code’s title and warning behavior should be treated as evidence that the vehicle has entered a protective operating response. It is not appropriate to assume that continuing a normal drive will necessarily complete a safe regeneration.

The document does not give a do-it-yourself forced-regeneration sequence or authorize removing the filter. Follow the vehicle’s warning and service guidance to establish why the high soot estimate occurred and whether its supporting measurements are credible. P246C identifies a serious restriction-related control condition, but the summary alone does not prove which component requires replacement.

Source and applicability

This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 54.
