P2556: a coolant-level label can lead to the N493 temperature-control circuit
Ross-Tech explains that P2556 may require checking N493 when the coolant-level sensor is wired to a different vehicle module.

Documented application
Ross-Tech independent VAG diagnostic guidance; match complete fault description and controller. Vehicle-specific notes do not establish universal applicability.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2556 has a coolant-level sensor or switch circuit label. Ross-Tech's VAG reference nevertheless includes both level sensor G32 and engine-temperature control actuator N493, along with their wiring and supplies. The relevant component depends on the vehicle's electrical architecture and which controller reports the fault.
Follow where the sensor is actually connected
Ross-Tech notes that G32 is often connected to the instrument cluster or central electronics rather than directly to the engine controller. In those arrangements, the thermostat or N493 circuit deserves attention when the engine module reports this code. A familiar generic title is not enough to establish the circuit being monitored.
The source gives an example using a particular central-electronics generation and measuring block for level status. That example is not a universal scan channel for all vehicles.
Separate actual coolant condition from electrical feedback
As diagnostic reasoning, the physical coolant level and the controller's circuit complaint are related but distinct evidence. Neither should be assumed from the other. Use the vehicle's repair manual to identify G32, N493 and the responsible module before testing. This independent reference does not establish that a thermostat must be replaced whenever P2556 appears, nor does it supply a universal power or ground specification.
