P263D: Reductant heater driver performance can be an electronics temperature fault
Ford diesel P263D checks heater-driver temperature at peak heater power, not simply the temperature of DEF in the tank.

Documented application
Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P263D is reductant heater driver performance. Ford’s diesel summary assigns it a specific thermal criterion: driver-circuit temperature above 125°C. The temperature belongs to the electronics, not the reductant fluid or ambient air.
Peak heater power provides the monitoring event
Ford lists the heater-plausibility monitor once per drive cycle at peak heater power, with one event needed for fault detection. That operating context matters: a normal temperature after heater demand has subsided does not reproduce the electronics’ peak-power condition.
The same table assigns different codes to heater current/voltage plausibility and reductant-tank temperature disagreement. P263D should not be rewritten as any of those neighboring tests simply because they all concern the DEF heater system.
What the thermal result does not locate
A driver overtemperature observation does not by itself distinguish an external electrical load condition from an internal electronics problem. The summary supplies neither a complete thermal model nor a component-replacement instruction.
Useful verification identifies the reporting heater driver, confirms the applicable peak-power event, and retains related heater or supply faults. Do not apply the 125°C value as a touch-test or fluid-temperature specification. The correct vehicle service information is needed for safe access and circuit isolation. The monitor’s practical value is to direct attention to the driver’s thermal condition under heater load instead of assuming that every heater-performance code proves a failed heating element.
Source and applicability
This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 85.
