P279C: transfer-case range information that needs a careful cross-check

GM’s hybrid monitor evaluates reported transfer-case mode against ratio information, but its published logic requires clarification.

Documented application

GM 2010 10OBDG10 hybrid-diagnostic monitor, physical page 130; four-wheel-drive implementation only. Only the cited monitor and calibration are described; per-code vehicle and engine applicability has not been established.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P279C in the cited GM hybrid document concerns transfer-case range plausibility. The controller compares the transfer-case mode received in a network message with information inferred from the driveline ratio. This gives the technician two different evidence streams to compare: what the transfer-case controller reports, and what the measured relationship suggests.

What can be established from the source

The monitor is explicitly restricted to four-wheel-drive operation. It evaluates continuously in a 12.5-millisecond loop and uses a failure count, rather than treating one inconsistent message as a completed diagnosis. Engine-speed and vehicle-speed conditions must remain valid for five seconds before the documented evaluation applies. These details explain why a brief startup reading and a persistent operating mismatch are not equivalent evidence.

There is an important limit in the published row. Its strategy describes a reported neutral state that disagrees with the actual transfer-case state, while the adjacent malfunction expression excludes both high-range and low-range ratios. Those statements do not provide a sufficiently clear, self-contained neutral-recognition algorithm. This article therefore does not turn them into numerical workshop pass/fail instructions.

Information worth preserving

Save the complete module scan, the commanded range, the reported transfer-case mode and available ratio-related data before clearing anything. Establish whether the network information is current and whether supporting speed signals are credible before condemning a range mechanism. A specialist should resolve the ambiguous expression against the correct vehicle service information. This source alone cannot establish that neutral is physically engaged, that the vehicle is secured against movement, or that a transfer-case replacement is justified.
