P281D: why solenoid H circuit-low can also mean an open circuit

P281D identifies a controller-specific solenoid H electrical fault whose interpretation depends on the transmission controller.

Documented application

Documented 2025 GM gm-2025-04b monitor only; vehicle, engine and controller applicability must be established separately.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P281D is an electrical diagnosis in the cited transmission table. The controller compares circuit voltage with its own fault limits to identify a short toward ground. The letter H does not identify the same hydraulic component in every transmission: this row covers a nine-speed torque-converter-clutch pressure circuit, a ten-speed torque-converter-clutch circuit, an eight-speed default valve and a CVT mode valve B.

The controller changes the interpretation

The important exception is explicit: an eight-speed T87a controller can also set P281D for an open default-valve circuit. Consequently, a scan-tool label saying “low” is insufficient evidence to conclude that a wire is grounded. Establishing the transmission and controller identity comes before selecting a circuit test or ordering a solenoid.

The monitor needs its relevant high-side driver enabled and diagnostic calibration active. Its documented decision accumulates more than 0.30 seconds of failure within a sample longer than 0.50 seconds. Battery voltage must be within the listed operating window, above 9 and below 32 volts. These are monitor conditions, not universal connector specifications.

Use the electrical evidence

A practical interpretation is to compare the fault record with driver state and supply conditions, then use the exact controller's electrical diagnosis to distinguish an interruption from a ground path. Hydraulic pressure testing alone cannot establish the cause of this electrical code. Verification requires the applicable driver to operate and the circuit monitor to complete; a code absent while that driver is disabled is weak evidence of a successful repair.
