P286A evaluates rod 5 drift using position, independently confirmed gear state and the controller’s corrective activity.

Documented application
2025 GM 07A-2 documented monitor only; module and calibration applicability must be matched to the vehicle. The application-matrix filename join remains unresolved; no model or engine fitment is inferred.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P286A describes unwanted movement of transmission rod 5. The documented controller does not rely on position alone: it compares the measured rod location with the logically engaged gear and verifies that gear using clutch and output-speed information.
Three ways drift becomes a fault
A wide-tolerance test looks for position outside the allowed band when no rod force is present. The no-force condition must first be established for at least 100 milliseconds. The table then lists a 500-millisecond fault-confirmation period, alongside valid position and speed evidence and no synchronizer shift in progress.
Two further paths watch the controller's attempts to correct smaller deviations. Ten or more activations of rod 5 drift correction can satisfy one criterion; another watches correction activity lasting more than 5,000 milliseconds. Repeated small corrections and one larger uncommanded excursion are therefore distinct evidence patterns.
How to interpret the record
Capture the logical gear, measured position and correction counter or activity state if the diagnostic system exposes them. A deliberate shift or a position-learning routine should not be treated as the same event as spontaneous drift; the monitor explicitly excludes those operating circumstances.
A sensor consistency fault can also invalidate the position evidence. Establish whether the controller trusted the position before interpreting repeated corrections as real movement. These conditions narrow the investigation but do not name a failed valve, linkage or sensor. Internal transmission diagnosis requires the exact application procedure, with stored evidence retained before adaptation changes.
