P2A03: bank 2 upstream oxygen-sensor readiness in the GM monitor

The cited GM P2A03 monitor checks whether the bank 2 upstream oxygen signal can establish and retain closed-loop readiness.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2A03 in this GM implementation asks whether the bank 2, sensor 1 oxygen signal satisfies the conditions needed for closed-loop operation. The monitored result is a readiness flag. A failed flag is not itself proof of an open wire, a defective sensor heater or a particular fueling fault.

A signal trapped in the middle

The published strategy establishes readiness when sensor voltage moves above 550 millivolts or below 350 millivolts. After readiness has been achieved, remaining between those boundaries for more than ten seconds makes the flag false again. The useful distinction is movement outside the central window versus a signal that stays within it; a single voltage reading near the center cannot show the preceding response history.

The controller evaluates this result repeatedly, with 200 failures required in a 250-sample window at a 100-millisecond loop rate. That persistence check is another reason not to diagnose the component from one scan-tool frame.

Conditions that make the observation meaningful

The row requires a warmed engine, specified speed and airflow regions, and a valid supply. It excludes deceleration fuel cutoff, overheating states and several related sensor or injector circuit faults. Active fuel management must be in all-cylinder operation. Comparing a cold startup or fuel-cutoff trace directly with this monitor would miss those conditions.

Preserve freeze-frame data and check the complete fault set before deciding which signal deserves testing. Vehicle-specific procedures must establish sensor location, circuit integrity and appropriate response tests. The source describes the monitor’s reasoning; it does not authorize replacing an oxygen sensor solely because P2A03 is stored.
