P2ABA: F-150 2.7L wastegate faults and a historical no-symptom case

Ford’s interim P2ABA guidance applies only when the specified F-150 has no additional faults or drivability symptoms.

Documented application

Ford SSM 51049, 2022: 2021–2022 F-150 with 2.7L EcoBoost and the listed wastegate-position codes in the PCM, subject to the no-other-code and no-drivability-symptom condition.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2ABA in Ford SSM 51049 concerns a specific warning-lamp case on 2021–2022 F-150 trucks with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine. The message lists P2ABA, P2ABC, P2AB7 and P2AB9 as possible PCM entries. It is historical interim guidance, not a complete diagnostic procedure for every wastegate-position fault.

Symptoms decide whether the interim path fits

Ford’s limited no-additional-service instruction applies when there are no other codes or drivability symptoms. A truck with reduced power, abnormal operation or an additional fault does not satisfy that branch. The source therefore should not be used to dismiss a genuine performance complaint simply because P2ABA is present.

Preserve the full scan and describe how the truck operates, rather than reporting only the base code. The 2.7L engine requirement is also material: another EcoBoost displacement or another model is not covered by this particular message.

An expected future solution is not a confirmed repair

The 2022 notice said engineering was working on a solution and gave an anticipated availability date. That projection does not prove that a later update exists for a particular VIN or that it has already been installed. A technician should check the applicable current Ford information before relying on the original interim instruction.

The bulletin provides no evidence that the wastegate actuator, rod or turbocharger must be replaced in this symptom-free case. It also gives no actuator test limits. Its useful distinction is between the qualified warning-only condition and a vehicle needing ordinary diagnostic work because symptoms, companion faults or configuration fall outside that boundary.
