P2B17: Cylinder-four learning must be judged during the calibration function
Ford diesel P2B17 concerns an injector pulse offset learned under specific temperature, pressure, and pedal conditions.

Documented application
Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.
The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P2B17 selects cylinder four in the injection-pulse offset learning-limit family. Ford’s monitor runs with the zero-fuel calibration base function, rather than treating every injection during ordinary driving as an interchangeable test event.
The comparison that matters
The observed test-injection energizing time is compared with a target for the injector. A deviation at least 156 microseconds below target, or at least 254 microseconds above target, triggers the documented condition. Typical monitoring duration is 30 seconds.
The enabling window includes fuel temperature of 10–75°C, coolant above a stated 50°C minimum, system voltage of at least 10 V, and accelerator input no greater than 2%. The requested-versus-actual rail-pressure difference must also remain within the listed 50-bar limit. These details explain why a learning result cannot be evaluated using pulse data from an unrelated operating state.
What to preserve in the diagnosis
Keep cylinder-four identity, adaptation status, and companion injector or pressure faults together. The summary lists satisfactory injector and other supporting inputs as prerequisites, so an untrustworthy control environment can affect interpretation of a learning complaint.
The underlying threshold is shared across the P2B1x cylinder codes; P2B17 is not evidence of a unique cylinder-four repair procedure. Ford also labels several conditions 3.0L-only, which prevents assuming universal applicability. The source does not identify a failed injector or provide a complete relearn method. Those conclusions require the correct vehicle and calibration information.
Source and applicability
This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 21.
