Documented application

2025 GM 25OBDG03A diagnostic monitor only; exact vehicle, engine and calibration applicability is not established.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P2B86 identifies coolant-pump overspeed relative to the command in the reviewed GM monitor. Although the generic dictionary also mentions air in the system, this source's decision is based on commanded versus reported speed; it does not directly confirm trapped air.

The error is command minus feedback

When actual speed is higher than requested, that difference becomes negative. The controller filters the difference and compares it with a command-dependent limit. For example, the supporting table gives minus 200 rpm at a 1,000-rpm request and minus 300 rpm at a 3,000-rpm request.

The strategy has separate branches above and below 12 V; the two reviewed supporting tables happen to list the same overspeed limits. That equality is specific to this calibration, not a reason to ignore supply voltage generally.

Stable commands prevent transient misinterpretation

Command changes must remain below 50 rpm between samples for at least three seconds. The enabled operating range is 300–3,480 rpm, with additional feedback-validity, voltage and temperature-related qualification. Failure must occupy eight seconds of a ten-second window.

A brief speed overshoot after a large command change is therefore different from the sustained qualified condition. Preserve request, feedback and supply voltage together when examining recurrence.

Verification should demonstrate acceptable tracking under the applicable enabled conditions. This result alone does not establish coolant level, air content, flow rate or the failed component. The source lists Type B, two-trip behavior and no mandatory pump replacement.
