Audi A4 P0299: confirm the CAEB wastegate diagnosis
A turbocharger estimate needs evidence that the applicable diagnostic branch fits.
Check the vehicle first.
- Case vehicle
- Audi A4, model years 2009–2010, CAEB engine
- Recorded display
- Static P029900; warning lamp on
- Evidence boundary
- Reviewed revision: 2031245/6. Check current VIN-specific instructions.
A boost shortfall is only the starting point
P0299 reports insufficient boost. Audi bulletin 2013060/7 illustrates why a component recommendation needs more evidence: for 2005–2007 A3/A4/A4 Cabriolet with 2.0 TFSI, a technician inspects the N249 recirculation-valve membrane and replaces the valve only if it is torn.
That earlier-vehicle check does not establish a recirculation-valve fault on this CAEB application. The inference is practical: the proposed part, observed failure and applicable vehicle instructions must agree.
An older bulletin can send you down the wrong branch
Revision 2031245/5 listed 2009–2012 CAEB A4/A5/A5 Cabriolet/Q5 and explicitly removed 2013 vehicles and A6. The later reviewed revision supersedes that broader application. Do not transfer its Q5 or 2011–2012 coverage into this A4 case.
Which finding changes the next step?
Workshop sequence from 2031245/6; not an owner road-test or dismantling procedure.
| Workshop finding | Audi diagnostic direction |
|---|---|
| Intake leak/blockage or additional fault | Address first, then reassess. |
| Sporadic P029900 | Workshop clear-and-road-test check for recurrence. |
| P023400 present | Separate TSB 2021082 route. |
| Matching vehicle, static P029900, warning lamp and wastegate play | Confirm link-plate movement along the actuator rod. |
| Required conditions absent | Follow guided diagnosis; no basis here for turbo replacement. |
What the clip instruction actually accompanies
The documented clip accompanies a new replacement turbocharger. It is not a remedy prescribed for adding to an already worn unit.
Make the estimate explain the decision
Ask the workshop to show the failed-condition evidence and the vehicle-specific procedure supporting its selected repair. Ask which other branch was considered, why it was rejected, and how the proposed repair will be checked afterward.
These are editorial questions for assessing an estimate, not additional tests mandated by the bulletins. Current VIN-specific instructions still need checking. The reviewed documents do not establish a universal wear measurement, repair price or likelihood of failure for this case.
