Honda CR-V P0300 and P0172: separate update, plug and camshaft branches

A repeat misfire after an update and a whirling engine noise are different diagnostic branches. Neither justifies replacing every part mentioned in the bulletin.

An earlier update may be incomplete

Bulletin 19-025 addresses certain vehicles with an A/C controller that could not be programmed. Its repair includes engine/transmission software and, when required, controller replacement. The scan-tool HVAC status distinguishes Not Complete from Completed or Not Applicable; the latter two skip controller replacement.

That means an invoice saying only 'software updated' may not settle whether all applicable work was completed. Ask for the VIN campaign result and controller completion status before accepting a repeat of the same job.

Recurring codes lead to plug inspection

Camshaft work needs separate evidence

For whirling noise, Honda requires a controlled comparison with its reference sound, then cam-lobe inspection if the noise matches. Camshafts that match the good reference return to normal diagnosis. A qualifying worn appearance leads to camshaft/rocker-arm replacement. These are workshop checks, not a home revving test.

Compare the estimate with the branch actually found

Ask the workshop to distinguish the original complaint from anything discovered during inspection. For a plug estimate, request the fouling finding; for internal engine work, request the noise and camshaft findings. Those questions help you understand why the scope of the repair changed.

Historical warranty terms do not establish present coverage. Ask Honda to check eligibility; the bulletin revision date does not restart warranty time.
