Mercedes P012800 on M270/M274: check software and the thermostat test

The same fault display appears in different Mercedes instructions; vehicle identification determines which one applies.

Check the vehicle first.

Engine scope
M270/M274; the main source provides no complete model-year list.
Hybrid boundary
205/253 plug-in hybrids have a separate reviewed instruction.

What the fault actually describes

LI20.10-P-060902 version 7 describes coolant warming more slowly than the ECU’s expected curve. It directs checking available engine software and following XENTRY’s R48 thermostat-heating-element test. Thermostat replacement is conditional on that guided diagnosis.

Why production history matters

The separate LI20.10-P-063817 version 5 applies to engines manufactured from June 2016. For vehicles produced before May 2017 it specifies a software update, followed by a cooled-engine test drive. If the fault returns, the historical route is the R48 test, a fresh quick test with freeze-frame data, and a technical-support case.

This is a documented production-specific branch, not proof that the older software package remains the correct installation today. Ask Mercedes service to select the current instruction for the VIN.

A plug-in hybrid is not an interchangeable application

LI20.10-P-074508 addresses 205/253 plug-in hybrids. Its July 2022 instructions begin with HVAC software and guided diagnosis. If the guided test passes, it says not to repair; the document reported an engine-software correction in development at that time.

That historical development status cannot establish present availability. The technician must check current information rather than order a thermostat solely because the same code appears.

A warm engine leaving the shop is not the complete check

The main version-7 bulletin specifies complete warm-up, fault clearing, at least eight hours of cooling, then a test drive reaching at least 70°C coolant temperature. If cooling-system work is needed, it calls for new coolant and the applicable thermostat/filter-screen service information.

That sequence explains why the workshop may need the vehicle overnight. Ask the booking adviser how they will allow for the cold-start verification rather than assuming a quick code clear finishes the job.

A focused service request

Provide the exact scan display and describe the circumstances in which you noticed the warning. Ask for the engine identification, chosen bulletin, software status, guided-test outcome and verification result on the repair order.

Do not open a hot cooling system or attempt programming from this article. The useful owner decision is whether the diagnosis and proposed repair agree, not how to bypass the prescribed test.
