Porsche Cayenne and Panamera camshaft codes: evidence before an engine estimate

A timing complaint needs a documented mechanical finding before a major repair decision.

Read the fault families together

Porsche ATI 1201/1584 associates camshaft-adjuster failures with timing, sensor, misfire, airflow and fuel-pressure faults. Its first step is a Vehicle Analysis Log and DME fault review. A fuel-pressure or airflow code by itself is not confirmation of adjuster failure.

What the workshop must establish

FindingMeaning in the 2012 diagnostic case
Intake timing faultsInvestigate the affected bank.
Bank 1 camshaft does not turn during the specified manual checkPossible adjuster failure.
Bank 2 concernDirect inspection requires cover removal.
Broken adjuster bolt headsAssess repair feasibility versus engine replacement; a feasible repair calls for both adjusters.

A recall record answers a different question

The January 2018 Panamera AH08 instructions require vehicle assignment to the campaign. They prescribe replacement fastening screws and, where necessary, one or both controllers. They also describe a prior-repair exception: when both controllers already have part number 948.105.051.22 or a later index, the campaign work is not repeated and the prior completion is documented.

These campaign instructions have their own vehicle scope. They do not establish that every car in the earlier diagnostic bulletin has an open recall, or that a recall repair will resolve every timing code.

Turn an engine estimate into an evidence trail

Ask the service adviser to separate three answers: what the scan recorded, what inspection actually demonstrated, and what the vehicle history shows. A quote that jumps directly from a code to an engine leaves the central diagnostic question unanswered.

Request photographs or a written description of the observed damage, the affected bank, and the reason a smaller repair is or is not feasible. For a campaign decision, ask for the VIN inquiry and previous repair record rather than a model-year assumption. These are editorial review questions, not extra Porsche test steps.

Do not reproduce the internal checks yourself

Leave internal engine checks to qualified service using the complete procedure. Describe abnormal running without trying to reproduce it. This guide helps assess a decision; it does not provide dismantling instructions.
