Silverado and Sierra P0420/P0430: check the airbox before exhaust parts
GM 16-NA-111 links bypassed intake debris with exhaust-component damage.

Look beyond the filter’s dirty side
Check cover tabs/fasteners, filter-seal contact, dirt past the filter and debris in the outlet duct. GM requires proper housing sealing before parts replacement.
What the inspection can justify

Ask for evidence at both ends of the proposed repair
Editorial questions: can the shop show the bypass path, rather than only a photograph of a dirty filter? Which observation identifies the damaged exhaust component? A quote should distinguish correcting the entry path from repairing damage already present. If no bypass evidence exists, ask what other diagnosis supports the exhaust repair. This case does not supply a universal replacement list.
Do not create another path for dirt
The 2017 Silverado manual prohibits running with the air-cleaner housing open, using water or compressed air to clean the filter/components, or driving without the filter. It directs inspection of sealing surfaces and replacement of a damaged element. Other models need their matching manual’s access procedure.
Keep the repair explanation specific
Request the identified sealing fault, how it was corrected and what subsequent assessment justified each exhaust part. These editorial requests make the work reviewable without asking an owner to dismantle a hot exhaust system or reproduce a fault on the road. A replacement air filter on the invoice alone does not document the complete diagnosis.
