Subaru Outback P2764: check the electrical branch before condemning the CVT

A solenoid-related code needs an electrical diagnosis with the correct vehicle specifications.

Choose the chart before choosing the component

P2764 belongs to Subaru’s LOW-code group. The charts also split by TCM location: outside or inside the transmission. The workshop must select both the code group and the correct module arrangement.

Why a cold measurement is not the whole result

The procedure compares cold and warm conditions, around 20°C and 80°C. Results and relevant fluid temperatures must be recorded. Vehicle-specific connector pins and normal resistance values come from the service manual, not this generic chart.

What the circuit investigation can distinguish

Connector faults, harness damage and internal wiring checks precede component conclusions. The internal work starts only after fluid has cooled. This is professional electrical diagnosis, not permission to probe unknown terminals.

A whole CVT is not the only documented repair scope

For these selected vehicles, July 2025 bulletin 16-155-25R requires component repairs when they will correct the failure. Its list includes the valve body, harness and TCM; valve-body replacement is qualified by the absence of fluid contamination from an internal failure. More extensive damage can change the decision.

The same bulletin describes a 10-year/100,000-mile CVT extension, subject to a Subaru Vehicle Coverage Inquiry and other terms. Its extra one-year window for certain out-of-limit vehicles ended June 30, 2026. Do not present that temporary window as ongoing coverage. The VIN inquiry must establish what applies now.

What to ask before authorizing the work

Request the diagnostic worksheet alongside the estimate. It should let you understand the tested circuit, the measured result and the reason the proposed repair follows. If the quoted scope is larger than the isolated fault appears to require, ask which additional finding explains the difference.

After an earlier repair, bring the invoice and ask what changed between the two visits. A repeat code can justify more investigation without proving that the same part should simply be purchased again. These are editorial questions for reviewing the evidence, not an alternative workshop procedure.
