Subaru P2682: confirm the thermo control valve and repair eligibility

The code, installed component and vehicle coverage are separate checks.

What Subaru documented

Subaru describes coolant vapor entering the valve’s sensor area, with P2682 or P26A-family faults possible. The updated assembly improves shaft durability and sensor waterproofing. This identifies a known failure mechanism; it does not establish that every cooling complaint or every stored code is caused by that mechanism.

The part number alone can be misleading

In 09-80-21R, all 21319AA040 valves incorporate the design change. The 21319AA010 number continued across the change, so its production-date code matters; parts made after June 7, 2021 incorporate it. The date marking cannot be read with the valve installed. Order the current part against the VIN rather than treating this historical number as a shopping instruction.

Check coverage before accepting a customer-pay repair

The April 2024 extension describes 15 years or 150,000 miles of TCV coverage for specified vehicles. It explicitly requires a Subaru Vehicle Coverage Inquiry before repair. Its Outback/Legacy list includes 2022, while the cited design-change bulletin lists 2020–2021; the two scope lists serve different purposes.

A matching model year does not establish present eligibility. Ask the retailer to check the VIN, in-service date, mileage and repair circumstances. The extension also describes reimbursement for certain earlier out-of-pocket repairs, with limits for amounts already reimbursed. Keep the repair invoice and payment proof if that question applies to you.

What a complete repair needs to account for

Subaru retains the full service-manual procedure. It specifically identifies the high-pressure fuel delivery pipe, intake-manifold gaskets and EGR-cooler gaskets as one-time-use items involved in this work. This is more than exchanging an accessible external sensor.

Three useful questions for the service adviser

  • Which diagnostic finding confirms the TCV concern on this vehicle, and which competing fault was ruled out?
  • What does the vehicle coverage inquiry show, and is the proposed part the current VIN-matched replacement?
  • Does the written estimate include the required associated parts and verification after installation?

What to record without dismantling anything

Record the complete code display, warning messages and any change in cabin heat or indicated engine temperature. These are observations to give the workshop, not confirmation of valve failure. Do not remove fuel-system parts or open a hot cooling system to inspect the valve. The questions above are editorial aids, not a replacement diagnosis.
