P0269: A cylinder-three balance fault can be specific to cold-start control

Ford’s 6.7L cold-start P0269 assessment uses a qualifying control window, so later warm operation may not reproduce the recorded result.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0269 reports cylinder three contribution/balance. Ford uses this identifier in both a general balancing description and a distinct 6.7L cold-start fuel-balancing monitor. That reuse makes the engine’s recorded operating mode an important part of the diagnosis.

What the cold-start monitor detects

For the cold strategy, correction above 90% of the allowable amount for current conditions sets the fault. The monitor runs in cold-start mode, needs completed wheel learning, and requires the crankshaft circuit and range/performance checks to be satisfactory.

The listed window is 500–3,000 rpm and 3.5–90 mg/stroke injection quantity, with a typical duration of 7.5 seconds. These are qualification and correction-monitor details; they are not instructions to force a cold engine through a workshop driving routine.

Why a warm retest can answer a different question

The general monitor on another page excludes regeneration and lists additional supporting inputs. A warm running check may provide useful evidence, but it does not automatically demonstrate a passing result for the cold event that originally generated P0269.

Identify cylinder three using the correct engine information, and retain any injector-circuit or crankshaft faults that could affect interpretation. A high balancing correction does not, by itself, distinguish fuel delivery from a mechanical combustion problem. Ford’s summary does not provide that isolation sequence or authorize an injector replacement. The useful starting point is the excessive correction in a verified operating window.
