P0284: Cylinder-eight balancing must be interpreted with operating mode

Ford’s 6.7L cold-start P0284 monitor evaluates an operating-dependent correction limit after crankshaft and wheel-learning prerequisites.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P0284 reports cylinder eight contribution/balance. Ford’s documented 6.7L cold-start strategy detects correction beyond 90% of the amount allowed for current conditions. This identifies excessive balancing effort, not a direct measurement of injector condition or cylinder compression.

A shared test with a specific cylinder identity

The cold-start criterion is shared across the cylinder contribution family, while P0284 selects cylinder eight. It operates with cold-start mode active, speed between 500 and 3,000 rpm, and injection quantity of 3.5–90 mg/stroke. Typical monitoring duration is 7.5 seconds.

Completed wheel learning and satisfactory crankshaft circuit/range diagnostics are required. The correction result should therefore be interpreted alongside the validity of its rotational reference, not as an isolated number.

What a useful retest needs to show

A later warm-running check does not necessarily reproduce the cold event. Ford separately describes a general balancing monitor that excludes regeneration and has additional supporting inputs. Preserve the original mode and determine which strategy was eligible during verification.

Cylinder-eight electrical codes such as P0282 and P0283 remain separate observations. Their presence may guide further testing, but P0284 cannot be rewritten as a particular electrical short. The source does not locate a physical cylinder across all engines or decide between injector delivery and mechanical causes. Use the actual vehicle’s service procedure to resolve those questions before selecting parts.
