P02E4: A diesel throttle jammed result requires active position control

Understand Ford P02E4’s command-position error and why learning or inactive control cannot reproduce the same check.

Documented application

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P02E4 is the diesel intake-air-control stuck-open classification in Ford’s throttle-valve monitor. The documented test compares desired and actual throttle position while closed-loop position control is active. A valve observed in one static position is therefore not enough to recreate the monitored relationship.

Eligibility separates a control error from an inactive valve

The monitor requires engine speed of at least 500 rpm, active closed-loop governing, no active adaptive learning and no jammed-valve fault already present on the actuator. The table lists 25 seconds to register a malfunction.

Its printed position-error criterion is outside a ±15% band: desired minus actual position greater than 15% or less than −15%. Although the code name says stuck open, the published comparison includes both directions of error. The article does not silently reduce that bidirectional rule to one assumed physical position.

Keep command, feedback and learning state together

Preserve the requested position, measured position and whether the controller was learning or actively governing. A measurement obtained during adaptation or without closed-loop control does not establish the same eligible fault.

The source does not identify a particular obstruction, failed motor or sensor from the comparison alone. Vehicle-specific diagnosis must determine whether the position disagreement is credible and why it occurred. The 15% figure is a monitor comparison, not an instruction to force the valve to a particular opening or replace it without further evidence.
