P02EC: High intake airflow is a closed-loop air-mass control discrepancy

Ford diesel P02EC compares desired and measured air mass while the EGR system is controlling air mass in closed loop.

Documented application

Ford 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary, revised August 25, 2023; these are documented monitor examples, not confirmed fitment or universal thresholds for every vehicle carrying this generic code.

The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.

P02EC describes diesel intake-air flow control with high airflow detected. In Ford’s monitor, the controller evaluates desired versus measured air mass while the EGR system is in closed-loop air-mass control. The code is not defined by a single universal airflow number at idle.

The permitted deviation depends on operating point

Ford states that the maximum and minimum air-mass deviations are functions of engine speed and torque. The summary does not publish a constant threshold that can be applied to every load point.

The monitor requires no air-system faults and active closed-loop air-mass control. Typical duration is ten seconds for the listed 6.7L implementation and five seconds for 3.0L. Those variant-specific times should not be collapsed into one generic setting condition.

What evidence changes the interpretation

A useful record relates measured air mass to the desired value, operating point, and control mode. An airflow reading that looks high in isolation cannot reproduce a model-relative comparison. Likewise, an open-loop period is not equivalent to the stated monitoring window.

P02ED is the low-airflow partner, while P04D9/P04DA on the same page evaluate EGR-ratio control limits. Keep the air-mass and EGR-ratio quantities separate even though they involve related systems. Ford’s summary does not identify a stuck valve, air leak, or defective meter as the cause. Those conclusions require the applicable service tests after the control discrepancy has been established.

Source and applicability

This explanation follows Ford’s 2023–2024 diesel OBD summary. Match the vehicle’s engine and calibration before applying these monitor values; a generic code alone does not establish fitment. Ford PDF, page 40.
