P0316: Misfire in the first thousand revolutions needs start-up evidence

Learn why Ford P0316 points to the early start-up window and why a warm idle may not reproduce the monitored condition.

Documented application

P0316 identifies misfire during the first 1,000 revolutions after start-up in Ford's published strategy. The timing is the defining clue. A later warm idle can be smooth even though the early-start evaluation detected a significant problem.

Preserve the beginning of the event

Useful evidence includes starting coolant temperature, cylinder-specific misfire counts and the conditions during those first revolutions. Ford's general misfire system evaluates rates over 200- and 1,000-revolution windows, with separate catalyst-damage and emissions purposes. A total trip count can hide when the start-up contribution occurred.

The source does not assign P0316 to one particular component. Ignition, fueling and mechanical conclusions require additional evidence; the code's useful information is that the abnormal combustion was observed early.

Confirm monitor prerequisites and history

The misfire strategy depends on crank/cam signals and learned profile correction factors. It can temporarily exclude rough-road, fuel-cutoff and high torque-change conditions. Check that the monitor was active before treating an absence of later counts as successful verification.

Ford's Mode $06 descriptions include current-cycle counts and weighted history over previous cycles. Distinguish those values when comparing before and after results, because historical counts need not disappear immediately after a successful repair.

A relevant verification reproduces an eligible start-up and examines the early window. The document does not prescribe one universal cold-soak duration, a replacement part or a guarantee that a warm restart will exercise the same condition.
