The code alone does not identify a failed part or establish that a vehicle is safe to drive. Confirm the vehicle, reporting module and applicable service procedure.
P0396 concerns cylinder 1 pressure-sensor function in the documented SKYACTIV-X engine. Mazda evaluates more than whether the sensor produces a voltage within its electrical range.
Three ways the measurement can fail
The PCM compares measured cylinder pressure with an estimate based on intake pressure and valve-closing timing. It also checks when peak pressure occurs and the pressure difference around top dead center. Incorrect magnitude, a late peak or an excessive before-and-after difference can therefore lead to the same function DTC.
The test operates under defined fuel-cut conditions with reliable crankshaft, camshaft and pressure inputs, a closed EGR valve and inhibited purge. Those controls matter: this is a plausibility assessment under a known engine state, not a simple low-compression reading taken from the code.
Evidence before sensor replacement
Mazda's sequence reviews accompanying pressure-sensor faults, checks the pressure signal for connector-related changes and investigates the sensor circuits. It also considers fuel-injection timing and inadequate compression. P0087 and P0172 are specifically considered in the related-code branch.
The listed response inhibits EGR and SPCCI, stops combustion feedback and retards ignition. Those operational changes can result from losing a trustworthy pressure measurement. Professional confirmation uses the prescribed deceleration-based monitor conditions after repair. Preserve the cylinder 1 identification and waveform or data evidence; P0396 alone cannot distinguish sensor drift from an engine condition that makes the expected pressure model inaccurate.
